While on Vacation

You're packed and ready to go - what should you remember to ensure your vacation is a success.

Before leaving home

Before leaving, limit the amount of people who are aware of your departure.

bulletDo not discuss travel plans with strangers
bulletTaxi drivers, store clerks

Ensure a trusted neighbor or family member is able to visit your home on a regular basis.

bulletShovel snow
bulletOpen & close drapes

Invest in a timer, make the house look occupied.

bulletPlace outside lights on a timing device
bulletPlace interior lights (common area - living room) on a timing device

Leave an itinerary with friends or family members, and check-in at regular intervals with them.

Notify the monitoring station of your plans, and who will be the primary contact while you are away.

Traveling

Carry all original documents (passports, travelers cheques, itinerary, etc) with you.

Have backup documentation (photocopies of identification, traveler cheque purchase stubs, etc) in your checked baggage.

When confirming reservations, ask for recommendations on traveling to and from airports, most hotels will have a shuttle transport available for guests or will recommend a safe alternative.

When leaving your hotel, or sightseeing, ask hotel staff for:

bulletDirections and safe use instructions on using public transportation
bulletAreas, locations to avoid
bulletCommonly accepted practices for walking outside after dark

Staying in a Hotel

Check all valuables (passport, money, jewelry, etc) in with the front desk to place in the hotel safe if there is not one in your room.

Protect your room number:

bulletDo not say your room number out loud
bulletWhen charging items to your room in the hotel restaurant, pass the receipt directly back to the hotel staff (don't leave them visible on your table)

Secure in your room:

bulletUse the dead-bolt lock on your door to secure the door when retiring in your room
bulletCheck with the front desk staff before opening the door to your room to a stranger, unless you have previously requested service

Make yourself familiar with the fire exit, escape routes from your room when first arriving.
