Internet Safety

In today's society online activities have become as commonplace as talking on the telephone, or watching a television show but the risks associated with such activities are ever increasing. 

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children has a vast amount of information available to assist us in protecting and educating ourselves and our children to the risks online.

Rules for online safety

bulletOutline clear, simple and easy to read rules for online use
bulletEnsure screen names are non-descript so as not to identify the user as a child
bulletLet children show you what they can do online, and visit their favorite sites with them
bulletEnsure children check with a parent or guardian before sharing any personal information
bulletSet guidelines for what personal information includes
bulletDiscuss the potential of anonymity online of sexual predators and criminals
bulletEducate them to the risks involved when meeting anyone in person who they first met online

Children lack the emotional maturity with which to make appropriate decisions and this may facilitate victimization, many resources are available to help you discuss and educate your children, providing a safer online experience.
